VAT registration in the UAE: when does your company need it?
VAT registration depends on your sales, not on your licence alone. Here is how the thresholds work and what to prepare.

The short answer
Who needs VAT registration in the UAE?
VAT registration depends on how much your business sells, not on the type of licence you hold. A new company with no sales yet does not usually need to register on day one. A small company can pass the limit quickly, so it is worth checking your sales every month.
The FTA looks at two time periods. The first is the last 12 months. The second is the next 30 days. If either one is above AED 375,000, registration is mandatory. You then have 30 days to apply.
- Mandatory: taxable supplies and imports above AED 375,000.
- Voluntary: taxable supplies, imports or expenses above AED 187,500.
- Below AED 187,500: you normally cannot register yet.
What counts towards the threshold?
Count your taxable sales in the UAE, including sales taxed at 0%, and the value of goods and services you import. Exempt supplies, such as some residential rent and certain financial services, are not counted. If you are not sure which group a sale belongs to, ask an accountant before you decide.
Free-zone companies are not automatically outside VAT. Some free zones are treated as designated zones for certain goods, but services and many other sales still follow the normal rules. Check your own activities instead of assuming that a free-zone licence means no VAT.
Should you register voluntarily?
Voluntary registration lets you recover VAT you pay on business costs, such as fit-out, equipment or software. It can also make your business look more established to larger clients who expect a tax invoice.
It also brings work. You must issue correct tax invoices, keep records and file VAT returns on time, even in a quiet period. Think about whether the VAT you could recover is worth the extra admin.
What should you prepare before applying?
You apply online through the FTA’s EmaraTax platform. Gather your documents first so the application does not stop halfway. The FTA may ask for more information depending on your business.
- A valid trade licence.
- Passport and Emirates ID copies for the owner or manager.
- Memorandum or articles of association, where available.
- Company contact details, address and bank details.
- Turnover figures for the last 12 months and an estimate for the next 30 days.
- Proof of turnover, such as invoices or a sales report.
What changes after you register?
When the FTA approves your application, you receive a Tax Registration Number (TRN). Put the TRN on every tax invoice. Add 5% VAT to taxable sales from your registration date and pay the VAT you collect to the FTA, minus the VAT you can recover on business costs.
Most businesses file a VAT return every quarter. Keep invoices and records for at least five years. Late registration and late filing can lead to penalties, so set reminders for each deadline.

Questions to ask
Ask before you register for VAT:
- What were my taxable sales and imports in the last 12 months?
- Do I expect to pass AED 375,000 in the next 30 days?
- Are any of my sales exempt or zero-rated?
- Would voluntary registration help me recover VAT on costs?
- Who will issue tax invoices and keep records?
- Who will file my VAT returns, and when are they due?
Let’s make your next step clearer.
