Emirates ID renewal in Dubai: how does it work?

Renewal is mostly an online form and a fee — once you know the dates and the order. Here is how it works, in plain English.

Your Emirates ID does not last forever. It expires on the same date as your residence visa — and when it does, everyday things like banking, your phone contract and government services can stop working.

The good news: renewal is one of the simpler tasks in UAE life. Once you know the order and the dates, it is mostly an online form and a fee.

When do you renew?

The expiry date is printed on the front of your card. It matches your residence visa, so the two renewals happen together.

You can normally start the renewal before the card expires. Waiting until after the expiry date is where the problems begin: fines can apply, and services that check your ID may refuse you.

New to all of this? Our guide to the UAE residence visa step by step explains how the visa and the Emirates ID fit together the first time.

How renewal works

The usual order looks like this:

  1. Check the expiry date on your card and your residence visa — the two are linked.
  2. Renew the residence visa first, if it is also due. The Emirates ID follows the visa.
  3. Submit the Emirates ID renewal application, online or through a typing centre.
  4. Pay the fees and wait for the application to be processed.
  5. Biometrics are usually only needed again if the authority asks — often your existing ones are reused.
  6. The new card is produced and delivered, or collected from a post office.

Most people renew online through the ICP smart services website or the UAEICP app. If you prefer help, an authorised typing centre can submit the application for you for a service fee.

What you need

Have these ready before you start:

  • Your current Emirates ID card.
  • A passport with enough validity left, plus a clear scan.
  • A valid residence visa, or a visa renewal already in progress.
  • A recent passport-style photo, if the authority asks for a new one.
  • Your registered mobile number — updates and approvals are sent by SMS.

Costs and timing

The card fee depends on how many years the new card is valid for, which follows your visa. On top of the authority’s fee, typing centres and service providers add their own charges — so two quotes for the same renewal can look different.

Processing is usually a few working days once the application is complete, with delivery time on top. While you wait, the digital Emirates ID in the official app is often accepted for many services.

Common problems

The common hold-ups, and what to do
The problemWhat to do
The visa expired firstThe Emirates ID cannot outlive the residence visa. If the visa has lapsed, the visa must be sorted before or alongside the ID renewal.
Fines for late renewalRenewing after expiry can mean daily fines. Check your dates early and start before the card runs out.
A changed phone numberApprovals and delivery updates go to your registered number. Update it with the authority before you apply.
Name or detail mismatchesIf your passport was renewed or your details changed, the authority may ask you to update records before renewing.
Waiting on the cardThe digital version in the official app can often be used while the physical card is produced.

On a long-term visa such as the Golden Visa, the card follows the longer visa validity — our Golden Visa guide explains how that route works.

Questions to ask

Ask before you renew:

  • When exactly does my Emirates ID expire, and when does my visa expire?
  • Is the Emirates ID fee included in my visa renewal quote?
  • Do I need new biometrics, or will my existing ones be reused?
  • How long is the new card valid for in my case?
  • Are there any fines on my file that I should clear first?
  • Can I use the digital Emirates ID while I wait for the card?

Let’s make your next step clearer.

Common questions

How do I renew my Emirates ID?

Renew your residence visa first if it is due, then apply for the Emirates ID renewal online through the ICP website or app, or through a typing centre. Pay the fees, and the new card is produced and delivered.

Can I renew my Emirates ID online?

Yes. The ICP smart services website and the UAEICP app let you submit the renewal online. You can also use an authorised typing centre if you prefer help with the application.

How long does Emirates ID renewal take?

Processing is usually a few working days once the application is complete, but delivery adds time. The digital card in the official app can often be used while you wait for the physical card.

What happens if my Emirates ID expires?

Late renewal can mean daily fines, and an expired card can block banking, telecom and government services. Start the renewal before the expiry date.

Is the Emirates ID linked to my residence visa?

Yes. The Emirates ID is issued for the same period as your residence visa and cannot be valid longer. If your visa is renewed, your Emirates ID is renewed with it.
